Daves Picks

There is an awful lot of great things, including independent music, available these days through the 'Net and we thought it would be a good idea to point out cool stuff to those who are interested. Stay tuned for further developments...

A number of independent projects I've played on have been released recently, including...
Gaelic Storm's new CD "How Do we Get Home" is a really cool record, that made it to #1 on the Billboard World Music Charts. I got to play a wide range of styles and sounds, from the acoustic to an 8 string fretless, and CD really sounds great.www.gaelicstorm .com.

Steve Nelson's "Look what the Katmandu" is a quirky, artful blend of the whimsical and the serious. Produced by my Nashville Unlimited buddy Don Henry, there are a host of great players, co-writers, and killer arrangements on there - visit www.stevenelson.org for more details.

Wendy Webb's "Morning in New York" is also available from CdBaby.Com, as is Steve's as well. Wendy's CD is mellow, moody, and a little trippy, and features some lush textures. Jim Horn, Dan Dugmore, and David Grissom are among the guests.

Just so you don't think I only listen to albums I play on...

Bryan Beller's "View", on his own Onion Boy Records, is one of the best bass albums I have heard in a good while. Bryan is the main man at SWR Amplifiers, but somehow he managed to create this multifaceted gem. It has melodic solo pieces, grinding odd time fusion, progressive rock, and more, yet it all sounds cohesive. He also has a great web site at bryanbeller.com

"That 1 Guy" blows my mind. I saw him at the Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga last summer. He is one of the best solo acts, bass or otherwise I have ever seen. His instrument is beyond description - think Rube Goldberg meets John Cage. The music is also nearly indescribable - something Tom Waits meets Frank Zappa and they go to a rave together. The visual aspect is absolutely unreal. His rig contained 2 huge metal pipes strung with bass strings, covered in drum triggers attached with duct tape, each one triggering a different sound. add a piccolo snare, processed vocals, a cowboy boot played as a snare and a musical saw. His record is called "Songs in The Key Of Beotch" (that's right) and it's available at that1guy.com.
